Psychometric testing is highly effective as a recruitment tool measuring essential work related aspects of an individual's personality including:

Personality profiling or psychometric testing of candidates is being increasingly used by companies and recruiting consultants in the UK as part of the recruitment process. The system will also give an indication of such vital areas as behaviour under pressure and an indication of current stress levels, so it is also used to measure and evaluate various perceptions of the 'ideal' person to carry out a particular role.

'Psychometrics' refers to the process of exploring and determining aspects of human behaviour. This information is then used to paint a picture of that person and what drives them.

Using this method of gaining important information about people became popular in the USA when assessing candidates for the military. Obviously the advantages spread to other industries, and soon became an industry standard.

This technique lends itself to recruitment, and it is rare nowadays to attend an interview, especially for a larger organisation, that does not include some kind of psychometric evaluation.

Taking a Psychometric Test is a huge challenge, and will only add to the pressure you are already under. Don't panic. Tests are designed to stretch people - what good is a test that everyone passes? Until recently, there were very few ways that a candidate could prepare to sit a test. Psychometric test publishers didn't make their tests available to the public. Some sample questions have been made available, but they never gave a real indication of what to expect.

So how can you prepare for them? Some employers now give out examples of the type of questions you are lightly to get. Look at them and see what they are asking. It could be that you have become rusty on the word processor and need to practice. Be aware that you will be under 'timed' conditions.

Most aptitude tests are designed in such a way that candidates will not complete them. Don't rush through the questions just to finish. It is normal not to finish the test, but do work quickly and accurately.

Tests are designed so that most people will get a third right, and no one achieves 100%. It's the middle zone that counts. It this area the more you get right the better, so push yourself here.

There are no right answers for personality. Be yourself, answer fairly and sensibly, but NOT flippantly. You are who you are!

Do yourself justice, get to the exam early, tell the examiner if you are on medication, relax and read the questions.

Remember that tests are only a part of the selection process and some recruiters do not use tests at all.
